ABOUT US
Monica Residence is named after Saint Monica, an extraordinary woman who is honoured for her virtue and dedication to her loved ones, who was the mother of the famous Saint Augustine. We are the third oldest residence on campus. With Wilgenhof and Harmonie being the oldest and second-oldest, respectively, we have always kept esteemed company by being nestled snugly between these two neighbours since 1926.

Through the years, the halls of Monica have encountered many different faces, and her legacy has been shaped by thousands of residents - the Monicaners with whom we love to keep in touch through our alumni interactions.
​
Monica is also the smallest residence on campus, which means that a special kind of commitment and innovation has always been required to make our voice heard on campus. By walking these halls yourself, and through the close guidance of our beloved George, you will be sure to experience this Monica spirit for yourself!

Monica is currently home to 130 students. We aim to cultivate an environment in which each resident has the opportunity to find her niche and excel at her strengths.
In an ever-changing social climate, we strive to create an inclusive space where every resident feels at home. We are intentional about the qualities that we claim as a residence, which is why we challenge ourselves to rethink traditional women's gender roles.
Today, Monica aims to promote the growth and development of our residents in order to reach their full potential. We believe that the Monica experience should equip them for the demands of society and ensure that they graduate to become active citizens. In short, we want Monicaners to feel that their time in residence has contributed something to their lives that wasn't there before.

Monica Residence is located on the central Stellenbosch campus, within walking distance of all classes and the central town.
​
We are right next to Wilgenhof, Harmonie and the SU botanical garden - which provides some amazing views!
The SU museum, the conservatorium and the Neelsie (student shopping center) are less than 5 minutes away on foot, as is the Eikestad Mall.
